Educational Rights of Immigrant Students

The Savanna School District is dedicated to fostering safe, supportive learning environments for all students, including those who are immigrants or from immigrant families. California law mandates the following protections be upheld:

Non-Discrimination

Students, regardless of immigration status or family background, have the right to a quality education, full participation in school activities, and attendance at public schools without facing discrimination.

Safe School Environment

Schools are generally prohibited from voluntarily granting access to campus by immigration enforcement officers, in the absence of a judicial warrant or court order. Schools are prohibited from requesting social security numbers or inquiring about the citizenship or immigration status of students or their parents or guardians, unless explicitly required by law.

Confidentiality of Student Information

By law, schools and districts do not collect or maintain information about a student’s or family’s immigration status.  Schools are required to safeguard student privacy and are not permitted to disclose personal information about students or their families for immigration enforcement unless presented with a court order or judicial subpoena.
